Gold Weight Units — Tola, Masha and Ratti
Every rate on this site is quoted per tola, and one tola is 11.664 grams. If the older units are unfamiliar — or you have been handed a weight in masha or ratti — here is how they fit together.
The three units

These follow directly from the 11.664 gram tola: a masha is a twelfth of it, a ratti an eighth of a masha.

Why rates are quoted per tola
The tola has been the working unit of the gold trade in this region for generations, and the market still quotes, negotiates and settles in it. A jeweller asked for a price will answer in tola; a rate announced in a bazaar is a tola rate. Grams are used alongside — particularly for imported bars, which are minted in round gram weights — but the headline figure is per tola.

Where each unit shows up in practice
- Tola — rates, bullion bars, buying and selling. Everything we quote.
- Masha — smaller jewellery weights, where a tola is too coarse a measure.
- Ratti — very small weights, fine work and stones.
Bars are a mix of both systems: 1 tola, half tola and 10 tola alongside 10 gram and 100 gram sizes. Our gold bar tables show both the gram weight and the tola equivalent for each.
A note on precision
We use 11.664 grams to the tola throughout, and every figure on this site follows from it. You will occasionally see marginally different conversions quoted elsewhere; that is a rounding convention rather than a disagreement about the metal. What matters is that the same figure is used consistently, which it is here.

How many grams is one tola?
11.664 grams. That is the conversion we use for every rate and every bar price on this site.
What is a masha?
A masha is one twelfth of a tola, so 0.972 grams. Twelve masha make a tola. It is used for smaller jewellery weights.
What is a ratti?
A ratti is one eighth of a masha, so 0.1215 grams. Ninety-six ratti make a tola. It is the smallest of the three units and is mostly used for very small stones and fine work.
