Bullion versus jewellery

The distinction matters most when you sell. Jewellery carries making charges you rarely recover, is usually 21K or 22K rather than 24K, and has to be tested and weighed before anyone will quote on it. A sealed bullion bar is 24K, its weight is certified on the packaging, and it can be valued in seconds from the day's rate. If your purpose is to hold value rather than wear it, bullion is the cleaner instrument.

Five things to check at any bullion counter

1. Both sides of the rate. A dealer who will only quote a selling price is telling you something.
2. The packing charge, stated separately. It should be a fixed rupee figure per weight, not a percentage folded into the price.
3. The seal and serial number. Intact packaging is what lets the next buyer skip testing.
4. A receipt showing weight, brand and rate used.
5. The buy-back terms, before you buy. Ask what they would pay for the same bar tomorrow.

Storage

We do not offer vaulting. Most customers keep bars in a bank locker or a home safe. Keep the packaging sealed and the purchase receipt filed — both make resale faster and better priced.
