Zakat on Gold and Silver
The Nisab thresholds for gold and silver are weight-based, so working out where you stand starts with weighing what you hold and valuing it at the current rate. Both of today's rates are published on this site.
We are a bullion dealer, not a religious authority. This page explains the weights and how to value them at today's rates. Whether zakat is due in your circumstances, which threshold applies, and how it should be calculated are questions for a qualified scholar.
The two Nisab thresholds
| Metal | Nisab weight | In grams | Value today |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | 7.5 tola | 87.48 | — |
| Silver | 52.5 tola | 612.36 | — |
Values are calculated from our published rates, which are set at our counter and are not a live market feed. They move as the rates move. Silver's threshold is heavier but usually lower in rupee terms, because silver is worth far less per tola.
Valuing what you hold
Three things decide the figure: weight, purity, and the rate on the day.
- Bullion bars. Weight and purity are printed on the packaging, so the arithmetic is direct — weight in tola times the rate. Our gold bar and silver bar pages list every weight we stock.
- Jewellery. Most Pakistani jewellery is 21K or 22K, so it is valued at that purity rather than at the 24K rate. The gold rate page publishes both.
- Raw metal. Rawa or Pathoor at 99.3% and Reni at 99.9% carry their own rates.
The gold calculator handles weight and karat together; the silver calculator does the same for silver. Both use the rates published here.
Weights and units
Nisab is given in tola, and one tola is 11.664 grams — so 7.5 tola is 87.48 grams and 52.5 tola is 612.36 grams. If you have a weight in grams from a jeweller's scale, divide by 11.664 to get tola. The units page covers masha and ratti as well.
What we can and cannot help with
We can tell you what your gold or silver is worth at today's rate, weigh it at the counter, and give you a figure in writing. That is the valuation part, and it is the part most people are looking for.
What we cannot do is tell you whether zakat is due, which threshold applies to your situation, or how to treat gold held alongside cash, debts or business assets. Scholars differ on several of these points. Ask someone qualified to answer them.
When people usually ask
Ramadan, mostly, and the rates move during it like any other month. If you are working out a figure for a particular date, the gold rate history and silver rate history record what we were dealing at, day by day.
Zakat on gold and silver — common questions
What is the Nisab for gold?
The gold Nisab is commonly given as 7.5 tola, which is 87.48 grams at the 11.664 gram tola. Its value in rupees changes with the gold rate.
What is the Nisab for silver?
The silver Nisab is commonly given as 52.5 tola, which is 612.36 grams. Because silver is worth far less per tola than gold, the silver threshold usually works out lower in rupee terms.
Which Nisab applies to me?
That is a question for a qualified scholar rather than for us. Views differ, particularly where someone holds both metals or holds cash alongside them. We can tell you what your metal is worth today; the ruling is not ours to give.
How do I value my gold for zakat?
Weigh it, note the karat, and value it at the current rate for that purity. Our gold calculator does this — enter the weight and select 24K, 22K or 21K. For bars, the weight and purity are on the packaging.
Do you provide zakat certificates or valuations?
We publish our rates openly and will tell you what we would pay for what you hold, which is the figure most people need. We do not issue religious certifications.
